Contact Lenses
At the office of Dr. Juliana Bock, we strive to meet all of your eye and vision care needs. Contact lens evaluations and prescription management are provided by our optometrists. They are called contact lenses because they are in direct contact with your eyes. In the optometry world, doctors refer to contact lenses as "medical devices". This is to highlight the special care doctors and patients need to take in order to make wearing contact lenses smooth and healthy. After a comprehensive eye and vision evaluation, Dr. Bock or Dr. Wirz will discuss the variety of contact lens options with you to select the type that best fits your vision needs and lifestyle. If you suffer from dry eye, allergies, or recurring eye infections, speak with our staff to determine whether contact lenses are right for you.
Evaluation
Contact lens prescriptions are valid for one year, thus wearers will receive a contact lens evaluation at the time of their annual exam in order to renew their prescription. This evaluation focuses on eye-health issues related to contacts. During the exam Dr. Bock or Dr. Wirz will find a lens with exactly the right amount of curve, thickness, and diameter for the patient's particular vision needs. The patient will work with our optician, to try on lenses and learn proper cleaning, storing, and handling techniques. Contact lenses need to be changed daily, bi-weekly, or monthly, depending on what type of lens you select. Specialized contact lenses, such as astigmatism and bifocal contact lenses, are also available. New wearer evaluations require an hour or so in order to obtain the best results.
*Note: Previous wears who are satisfied with the comfort and vision of their current contacts will still need to have an evaluation in order to renew their prescription and order more contacts.
Follow-up Visit
A follow-up visit is often required for new wearers or for previous wearers who have had either a change in prescription or a change of brand. This follow-up is usually planned one or two weeks after the original fitting. This visit gives the doctor a chance to see how the patient's eyes are responding to the contacts. During this second appointment, the doctor will determine how well the lens fits the surface of the eye and whether or not it's causing any irritation.
Cosmetic Lenses
Advances in contact lens technology have created great options for cosmetic and prosthetic lenses. Custom contact lenses can be created to camouflage any color variation or irregularity and produce a natural eye color. Cosmetic lenses are also available to transform your eye color. Call us at (804) 739-3221 if you are interested in modifying or changing your eye color with contact lenses.
